Designed by GLPM Architects of Lawrence, Kansas and built in 2003, the Capitol Federal Natatorium is Topeka Public School's premier competitive indoor swimming facility. The Natatorium's primary feature is an Olympic-sized 50-meter pool. The Natatorium also features a four lane 25 yard warm up pool, crash area, multi-purpose room, lobby, concession stand, and public locker rooms.

Public Swimming (NATATORIUM IS CLOSED WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2)

During weekdays, the Natatorium is open for public lap swimming, except for days in which we are hosting events. Finally, during the summer season, swim lessons & lifeguard certification classes are offered and available to the public.

Capitol Federal Natatorium Usage

The Natatorium is the home and practice facility of all Topeka Public Schools including:

  • Topeka High School Trojans
  • Topeka West High School Chargers
  • Highland Park High School Scots.

The Natatorium has hosted meets such as Topeka Public School's swim/dive invites, City swim/dive Championships, Centennial League swim/dive Championships, and KSHSAA State Swimming/Diving Championships. In addition, the Natatorium has hosted the Sunflower State Games and the Sunflower Senior Games. The USA Swimming team Topeka Swim Association also holds their practices and home swim meets at the Natatorium.

Topeka Public Schools offers swimming lessons and water safety classes through the Capitol Federal Natatorium from June 3 through July 25, 2024.  These lessons are 45 minutes in length and are split into subsequent progressive levels outlined below.

Lessons cost $40 (tps501 resident) or $50 (non-tps501 resident) per child per two-week session. 

This is NOT an online registration. To enroll, you must visit the Natatorium (530 SW Tuffy Kellogg Dr) Monday-Friday between 8am and 5pm.

Level 1
  • Enter and exit water independently
  • Blowing bubbles
  • Bobbing 5 times
  • Retrieving submerged objects with hands in shallow water
  • Front & back float with assistance as well as roll
  • Front & back glide 2 body lengths with assistance
  • Demonstrate alternating and simultaneous arm and leg action on front and back for 2 body lengths
Level 2
  • Bobbing 10 times
  • Fully submerge and retrieve objects from chest deep water
  • Rotary breathing 5 times
  • Front & back float for 10 seconds as well as roll independently
  • Tread water for 15 seconds
  • Combined arm and leg action on front and back for 5 body lengths
Level 3
  • Dive from a sitting or kneeling position into 9 feet deep water
  • Bobbing 15 times while moving towards safety
  • Rotary breathing 15 times
  • Tread water for 1 minute & survival float for 30 seconds
  • Demonstrate effective front crawl, breast stroke kick, scissor kick & elementary backstroke for 15 yards
  • Demonstrate understanding of dolphin kick
Level 4
  • Dive from a standing position into 9 feet deep water
  • Dolphin kick 3-5 body lengths underwater & on back
  • Front crawl and back crawl open turn
  • Tread water using 2 different kicks for 2 minutes
  • Perform front crawl & elementary backstroke for 25 yards
  • Perform breaststroke, back crawl, sidestroke & butterfly for 15 yards
Level 5
  • Perform flip turns while swimming front & back stroke
  • Tread water for 5 minutes and tread water using only legs for 2 minutes
  • Perform front crawl & elementary backstroke for 50 yards
  • Perform breaststroke, back crawl, sidestroke & butterfly for 25 yards
Level 6/Adult
  • Perform front crawl & elementary backstroke for 100 yards
  • Perform back crawl, breast stroke, sidestroke, and butterfly for 50 yards
  • Perform butterfly & breaststroke turn
  • Surface dive and retrieve objects from a depth of 7-13 feet
  • Understand circle swimming and how to use a pace clock
  • Understand how to use fins and paddles while swimming

Lifeguard Training Classes

The Capitol Federal Natatorium offers American Red Cross lifeguard training & lifeguard re-certification courses throughout the year.  Please call for dates and times on the summer program, as well as how to enroll and prerequisites.  Additional classes may be held at the Capitol Federal Natatorium throughout the year.
